A new era of human spaceflight is set to begin as astronauts once again launch from American soil on American rockets to the International Space Station.
NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will be the first crew to fly on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, lifting off on May 27 for an extended stay at the space station. They were among the first astronauts to begin working and training on SpaceX’s next-generation human spaceflight vehicle and were selected for their test pilot and flight experience, including several missions on the space shuttle.
Meet Bob Behnken – As the joint operations commander, Bob Behnken is responsible for the rendezvous, docking and undocking of the Crew Dragon spacecraft. A native of Missouri, he was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2000 and has completed two space shuttle flights. Before joining NASA, he was a flight test engineer with the U.S. Air Force.
Meet Doug Hurley – In his role as spacecraft commander, Doug Hurley is at the helm for activities such as launch, landing and recovery. The New York native was selected as an astronaut in 2000 and has completed two spaceflights, including the final space shuttle mission in July 2011. Before joining NASA, he was a fighter pilot and test pilot in the U.S. Marine Corp
